What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag: Bras and Lingerie for Birth and Beyond

Hospital bag packing is one of those tasks that feels overwhelming until you break it down — and then still feels overwhelming because there are so many conflicting lists online. When it comes to bras and lingerie specifically, most guides tell you to pack a nursing bra and leave it at that.

We think you deserve a bit more guidance than that. Here's exactly what we'd recommend for your hospital bag — for birth, the first 24 hours, and the early days at home.

What stage are you packing for?

Your hospital bag needs to cover three distinct phases: labour and birth, the first day or two postpartum in hospital, and coming home. The right bra for each of these stages is slightly different — here's what to think about for each.

During labour: comfort above everything

During labour, you want to be wearing as little as possible that feels restrictive or

uncomfortable. Most mamas wear a soft sleep bra or nothing at all during active labour — comfort and ease of movement are the priorities.

If you want breast support during labour, look for a soft, wirefree bra with no underwire and minimal structure. A sleep bra or soft wirefree maternity bra is ideal. You'll also want easy access if you're planning to use a TENS machine or if you want skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth.

Immediately postpartum: the first 24–48 hours

This is when your hospital bag bra earns its place. In the first 24 to 48 hours after birth, you'll want a nursing bra that's easy to open and close one-handed, soft enough to wear on tender, newly postpartum breasts, and comfortable enough to sleep in if needed.

We recommend packing two nursing bras in your hospital bag — one to wear, one spare. Your milk hasn't come in yet at this stage (that usually happens two to five days after birth), so pack for your late pregnancy size and expect that things will change.

What to look for in a hospital bag nursing bra

Wirefree — your body doesn't need any additional pressure in the first days

Single-handed nursing clips — you'll have a baby in the other arm

Soft, stretchy fabric — your breasts will be sensitive and changing rapidly

A style that works with breast pads — leaks start early

Coming home: the first few weeks

By the time you're home, your milk will likely have come in and your breast size will have changed — sometimes significantly. This is when a FlexFit nursing bra really earns its place, as the stretchy construction accommodates the fluctuations in size that happen feed to feed and day to day.

We recommend having two to three nursing bras ready at home before your baby arrives. A sleep bra for nights, and one or two daytime nursing bras that you're comfortable wearing from morning to evening.

Don't forget a sleep bra

A sleep bra is one of the most underrated items for a hospital bag and the early postpartum period. Softer and more relaxed than a daytime nursing bra, a sleep bra provides gentle support for tender, newly postpartum breasts overnight — and, crucially, holds breast pads in place for the leaking that's almost inevitable in the early days and nights.

Hotmilk's sleep bra range is designed specifically for this — soft enough to sleep in, with nursing access built in so you can feed without removing it in the middle of the night.

How many nursing bras do I need for my hospital bag?

For the hospital bag itself: two nursing bras is the right number — one on, one spare. You don't need more than this for the hospital stay itself.

For home: aim for three to four nursing bras total, across a mix of styles. One sleep bra, two daytime nursing bras, and one slightly more structured style for when you're ready for a bit more shape and support. This gives you enough to rotate without feeling like you're constantly doing laundry.
